Who We Are
We are the Bonds and we have always had a passion for beautiful spaces. We love interior design, architecture, working with our hands, and figuring out how to do things ourselves. When we were searching for our first home in Portland, Oregon we were set on finding a mid-century modern gem with all of the period details that made this era so damn cool - vaulted tongue and groove ceilings, unique fireplaces, open floorpans, wall paneling, great natural light, etc. After 4 years of on and off hunting we found our home, a 1962 split front mid-mod that was far from perfect but had loads of potential. The house had so much of what we wanted - Three fireplaces (one stone, one brick and a Preway wood stove), T&G vaulted ceilings, floor to ceiling windows, a super unique floorplan, a sunroom with a built in dining banquette, a beautiful yard and more. There was so much potential living within the walls of this house, but it also needed a bit of love to help revive it back to its original glory.
As life goes, we found the house during a perfect storm of big life changes, most significantly the arrival of our twin daughters. We tried to set realistic expectations for what we could accomplish as new parents and new home owners, but we were hungry to get after updating our home. Although we have an eye for design, are handy, and love HGTV, we did not have any actual experience with home renovations. As we began to receive bids from vendors we quickly realized how much labor drives up project costs. Knowing we planned to remodel the entire house, we quickly realized we would need to get our hands dirty if we wanted to keep our budget in check, and so the adventure began.
The more we have worked on the house, the more intimately we have gotten to know her story, through random artifacts found during our demos, to chronicles of paint colors and carpet choices, a secret laundry chute, a vaulted ceiling hidden away for half a century, to mystery light switches that just don’t seem to be connected to anything. This space will document our chapter of that story, as we share our journey of making this house The Bond House.
